Nine teams in Varsity 1 competed for the chance to raise the 2019 state championship cup last Saturday at Matteson Square Gardens in St. Peters, MO. At the end of bracket play the Oakville Tigers matched up against the Fox Indians.

The Indians struck first as Clayton Liefeld received a pass from Braden Harwell to give Fox a 1-0 lead at the 9:45 mark. Oakville then pilled on four goals in a span of five and a half minutes to give the Tigers a 4-1 advantage heading into the second period.

The intermission did not slow the Tigers down as Jack Anderson and Zach Daniels extended the lead to 6-1. The Indians made a late push but was only able to score one goal and the Oakville Tigers were the 2019 V1 state champions. This was the second V1 title for Oakville in the last two years.

The Varsity 2 championship was one of the more physical playoff games of 2019. The Fort Zumwalt West Cougars and Francis Howell Central Spartans combined for 40 minutes in penalties.

The Spartans dominated the puck possession in the first period, scoring four goals to the Cougars one. FHC would head into the second period leading 4-1.

FZW picked up their game in the second as Eric Papuga cut the lead to 4-2, but Francis Howell Central’s Tyler Bradley and Brett Robinson sealed the deal for the Spartans with a 6-2 victory.

The Varsity 3 state championship took extra time to decide as the Francis Howell Vikings and Duchesne Pioneers faced off against one another.

It was an evenly matched contest as each team lit the lamp twice in the first period and skated to a 2-2 tie heading into the second.

The second period was much of the same as Francis Howell got goals from Ethan Ormson and Kyle Vossmeyer, while Duchesne’s Austin Meers and Troy Haeffner each scored to send the game to overtime.

The first shot in overtime proved to be the winner as the Vikings Kyle Vossmeyer scored and made Francis Howell the 2019 V3 state champions.
