V1, V2 & V3 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Fenton, MO – The Varsity 3 championship game saw the #1 SLUH Jr. Billikens taking on the #3 Columbia Eagles. These two teams matched up twice during the regular season with each team getting one win a piece. The Eagles scored their first four goals in the first four minutes and took a 6-3 lead heading into the second period. Though the Billikens scored just 26 seconds into the second, the Eagles offense was just too much for SLUH to handle and Columbia defeated the Billikens 12-8. Each team had a total of 24 shots on goal and the Eagle’s Ben Kleinschmidt got the game winning goal. Columbia is the 2017 Varsity 3 State Champions!
The Varsity 2 state championship game looked to be a great matchup between the #3 Seckman Cougars and the #4 Lindbergh Flyers. Each team traded goals back and forth in the first period as it would be 3-3 heading into the second. It was all Flyers in the second period as Lindbergh’s Jared Westcott scored all three of their goals in the final period to give the Flyers a 6-3 victory. Westcott would end the game with four goals and an assist to give Lindbergh the 2017 Varsity 2 State Championship!
The Varsity 1 championship game had the #2 DeSmet Spartans taking on the #5 CBC Cadets. The Spartans first started off defeating #7 Fox in the quarterfinals, then was victorious over #6 Rockwood Summit to advance to the big game. CBC on the other hand had their hands full with #4 Fort Zumwalt South in the quarterfinals, as the Bulldogs took them to a game three where the Cadets would skate away with a 5-1 win. In the semifinals, the Cadets matched up against #1 Oakville as they also forced a game three but again CBC found a way and advanced to the V1 championship game.
It was the Spartans against the Cadets last Sunday night at the Fenton Forum for a chance to raise the Varsity 1 state championship cup. DeSmet won the only contest of the year between these two teams back on March 25th as the Spartans narrowly defeated the Cadets 4-3. In the final, the first period was a defensive battle with both goaltenders making big saves as both teams would head into the second period tied 1-1. The flood gates would eventually open for the Cadets as they would come away with the 7-3 victory over the Spartans. CBC’s Noah Roofe would lead the way with two goals and an assist. CBC is the 2017 Varsity 1 State Champions!
